Director of Policy and Programme, UN World Food Programme
Denise Brown is currently the World Food Programme’s Director of the Policy and Programme Division. Denise is responsible for the development of relevant policies to guide WFP’s work and to support the design and implementation of country strategies and programme plans.
Previously Denise served as WFP’s Director of Emergencies during which time she repositioned the division to support WFP’s response to record levels of crises, including the “four famines” risk in 2017.
Before moving to WFP’s global headquarters in Rome, Denise served as WFP Regional Director in West Africa, responsible for operations across 20 countries, as well as a number of regional crises and corporate emergencies including the Ebola Virus pandemic response. Denise joined WFP in 1998 in Iraq and has worked in challenging environments including Afghanistan (1999 – 2002), Kenya (2002 – 2007) and Somalia (2007 – 2009). From 2011 to 2013, she served as WFP Country Director for Niger where she successfully coordinated an early response to the food security and nutrition crisis of 2012.
Denise is a national of Canada and holds a Master’s of Science in research in children’s development from Purdue University in the United States and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia.
