A pilot under the Alternative Livelihoods (AL) project is being implemented in Migori county. This is an initiative spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP). The aim of the AL project is to use the collective purchasing system within the United Nations system, and to create an enabling and supportive crop production and marketing ecosystem that will incentivize farmers to move away from tobacco farming.
The interventions under the AL project are aimed at unlocking the High Iron Bean value chain to enhance the participation of farmers through increasing their marketable surplus thereby improving their livelihoods.
The main objectives of the pilot are to achieve:
- Better Health Outcomes
- Environmental Preservation
- Economic Freedom for the farmer
