Project Description
The Alternative Livelihood (AL) for tobacco farmers project is a UN multi-agency pilot project convened and funded by the World Health Organization (WHO) with the World Food Program (WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) each having an implementing role in the project. The project aims at getting a profitable, healthy and sustainable alternative source of livelihood for the small scale, resource poor tobacco farmers.
WFP delegated the AL task to FtMA since they were already working in Migori including in the tobacco growing areas and had a model to engage farmers. High iron beans were selected as the preferred alternative to tobacco in the pilot since there is clear demand in the market, which is growing, plus its high nutritional value.
